Smooth Sea (Single 2021)
SMOOTH SEA
Stepfather’s old sailor pipe, smoking
He got that old cutter seagoing
Momma knew what laid in store
This safe Harbor kept him gone for so long
Leaving Momma longing
Hanging on
Every night she was rocking to the lighthouses pulse
Listening to the rain and thunder growls
She said, don’t be sad for me, it’s alright
She said and kept staring at the throbbing light
But I could see it break through the tear in the corner of her eye
The words she left unspoken
Overplaying, laughing and joking
And I knew what laid in store
I could hear her cry in desperation almost every night
Something that feels so wrong just can’t be right
And then as they found this wreck of a little boat
Somebody said there was a rope around his throat
Only her voice could be heard cutting through the morning cold
She said, don’t be sad for me, it’s alright
And kept staring at the throbbing light
But I could see it break through the tear and the fear in the corner of her eye
