From the recording Smooth Sea
Lyrics
SMOOTH SEA
Stepfather’s old sailor pipe, smoking
He got that old fish cutter seagoing
Momma knew what laid in store
This safe Harbor kept him gone
Leaving Momma longing
Hanging on
Every night she was rocking to the lighthouses pulse
Listening to the rain and thunder growls
Holding his pillow tight, she said
Her tears would make an ocean of her bed
The words she left unspoken
Overplaying, laughing and joking
And I knew what laid in store
She said, don’t be sad for me, it’s alright
She said and kept staring at the throbbing light
But I could see it break through the tear in the corner of her eye
I heard her cry almost every night
Something that feels so wrong just can’t be right
And then as they found this wreck of a little boat
Some said there was a rope around his throat
Only one voice could be heard cutting through the morning cold
She said, don’t be sad for me, it’s alright
And kept staring at the throbbing light
But I saw it break in the tear in the corner of her eye
